In the final months of the war thousands of soldiers were killed at Sedan and Verdun, needlessly sacrificed to absurd commands. While the "front-line swine" lost their lives fighting in the trenches, slaughtered in futile offensives, the "base-officers" amused themselves behind the lines with a visit to a brothel. After the war, they were subject to reproach, most often by the painter, Otto Dix, himself a soldier in the First World War, who documented their behaviour in sketches and paintings.
