Despite their new affiliation to Prussia, many Rhinelanders continued to feel sympathy for France. The time of the French had shaped the Rhineland so markedly that the inhabitants held on to many of its achievements, such as civil and commercial laws, chambers of commerce and the district councils. In the interim period between French and Prussian rule the administrative structure remained intact. As a result the Rhinelanders appreciated their French institutions more than ever, defending them with great tenacity against the Prussians.
